Injury in Australia

Scope of this report

This report presents information on just under 1.9 million ED presentations and about 548,000 hospitalisations with a primary diagnosis of injury between 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. Data on just over 14,700 deaths is presented where injuries are recorded in finalised cause of death records for 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022.

Data is reported at the national level. This report updates information about injuries overall annually. Each specific cause of injury will be separately updated throughout the year.

Trends over the preceding decade of injury hospitalisations between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2023, and injury deaths between 1 July 2012 and 20 June 2022 are included in this report.

All numbers reported in text have been rounded. Graphs and tables present the actual numbers. Please refer to the technical notes for further details on methodology, including inclusion and exclusion criteria for counting injuries in ED, hospital and deaths data sources.
