Palliative care measures

The palliative care measures aim to track if 'people affected by life-limiting illnesses get the care they need to live well', aligning with the vision of the National Palliative Care Strategy (2018). These measures were developed by the AIHW and are consistent with the broad goals of the Strategy.

This report provides the first update on the progress of 5 objectives in palliative care:

  • effective
  • safe
  • appropriate
  • continuous
  • accessible care.

Objectives

Effective

People with life-limiting illnesses receive effective, high-quality, evidence-based care that minimises pain, discomfort, and mental distress.

People with life-limiting illnesses receive safe and responsive care that avoids overtreatment, accident and injury.

Appropriate

People with life-limiting illnesses are involved as much as they want to be in planning and decisions about their care and receive the care and die in the place of their choosing. Carers have the information and support they need.

People with life-limiting illnesses are provided with well-coordinated, uninterrupted, and timely care across programs, practitioners, and levels over time.

Everyone in Australia can access quality palliative care when it is needed, regardless of their geographic location, age, condition, socio-economic needs, cultural and religious background, or languages spoken.
