Description of data source

The ASNAHC NBEDS is comprised of information about care provided to subacute and non-acute admitted public and private patients in activity based funded hospitals.

The scope of the NBEDS is:

  • Same-day and overnight admitted subacute and non-acute care episodes
  • Admitted public patients provided on a contracted basis by private hospitals
  • Admitted patients in rehabilitation care, palliative care, geriatric evaluation and management, psychogeriatric and maintenance care treated in the hospital-in-the-home.

For palliative care type episodes, data elements for each change in phase of care is reported.

Measures reported
4.2b Proportion of inpatient unstable palliative care phases that lasted 3 days or less.
Age group

The age of the patient at the time of treating.

Disaggregation categories: 0–14, 15–24, 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, 55–64, 65–74, 75–84, 85 or over.

Sex
The sex of the patient according to the categories 'Male’, 'Female’, ‘Intersex or Intermediate’ and ‘Not Stated/ Inadequately described’. Only individuals with sex recorded as 'Male’ or 'Female’ were included in analyses.
Disaggregation categories: Males, Females.

Indigenous status
Whether a person identifies as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin (based on Indigenous status standard question). 
Disaggregation categories: First Nations, non-Indigenous.

The state or territory of the usual place of residence of the patient.
Disaggregation categories: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory, and the Northern Territory.
Remoteness area
The Remoteness Area of a person’s usual residence based on Statistical Area Level 2 and according to the Australian Statistical Geography Standard 2016.
Disaggregation categories: Major Cities, Inner Regional, Outer Regional, and Remote and Very Remote (combined).

Socioeconomic area
The socioeconomic area of a person's usual residence based on Statistical Area Level 2 and according to the ABS Socio-economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) Index of Relative Socioeconomic Disadvantage (IRSD).
Disaggregation categories: SEIFA IRSD quintiles (1–5 or lowest/ most disadvantaged to highest/ least disadvantaged socioeconomic area).
