Beer available for consumption

In 2022–23, 78 litres of beer per capita were made available, which is around 3.3 litres of pure alcohol per person aged 15 and over. This represented a decrease of 2.1% from 3.4 litres of pure alcohol per capita in 2021–22.

The ongoing trend increasing volume of mid-strength beer continued in 2022–2023:

  • 72% of beer was full-strength, the lowest proportion observed since 2000–01.
  • 25% of beer was mid-strength, the highest amount seen since 2000–01.
  • Just 3.0% of beer was low-strength, the lowest amount observed since 2000–01.
