Risk factor profiles

Five risk factor profiles were identified for people living with dementia in residential aged care (Table 2). These are similar to the profiles created for those in the community but were based on the specific risk factors that were found to be associated with falls among people living with dementia in residential aged care (Figure 1, Table S3). Each risk factor profile is a grouping of people who have similar risk factor combinations and can be used to understand if a greater proportion of identified groups of people experience falls or severe outcomes following a fall hospitalisation.

Table 2: Risk factor profiles identified for people living with dementia in residential aged care
Risk factor profileProfile descriptionNumber of people in profile
1Low risk factors11,124
2Moderate risk factors11,602
3Polypharmacy (dispensed 5 or more different medications)6,551
4Polypharmacy and moderate risk factors12,689
5Multimorbidity (people with multiple health conditions)9,329

These risk factor profiles were created using cluster analysis, for further details see the following section, Identification of risk factor profiles.

Figure 6 shows the 5 most common risk factors within each risk factor profile identified among people living with dementia in residential aged care, the proportion of people within each profile with each risk factor, and the age and sex breakdown of each profile. Like people living with dementia in the community, hypertension was common across profiles. Risk factor profile names are based on distinguishing risk factors within each grouping. The full list of risk factors by profile can be found in Table S13, and the total number of people in each profile by fall or no fall, and age and sex breakdown, can be found in Table S14.
