Summary
Cancer data presented here relates to:
- the five year period 2010–14, and the ten year period 2005–14;
- Primary Health Network areas (PHNs) and Statistical Areas Level 3 (SA3s);
- cancer incidence, mortality and prevalence.
Details are provided for 18 cancer sites, as well as for ‘all cancers combined’.
The data are presented in four Excel workbooks.
Small counts evident in many areas can lead to considerable variability in the estimates presented so users are advised to pay particular attention to the 95% confidence intervals provided in the Excel workbooks. Rates, trends, projections, etc. have been presented with ranges defined by upper and lower 95% confidence limits around the estimate.
It is important to read the Cancer statistics for small geographic areas—User guide and methods manual (PDF 784KB) to ensure the data are interpreted appropriately. Statistical methods are also described and issues around the use of indirect age-standardisation are explored and discussed.
Data are summarised for PHNs in the interactive tables below. Note that:
- small area cancer statistics can be volatile due to the relatively small number of cases involved, and their interpretation should be informed by the information on statistical significance presented in the tables.
- Rates of cancer will vary between areas as a result of a range of differences in age, health behaviours (eg smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and sun-safe behaviours), biomedical risk factors (eg overweight and diabetes), occupational, and environmental exposures (eg UV and asbestos exposure).
