AIHW news

Do you use the GRIM books? We want to hear from you!

Each year the AIHW releases 56 Excel workbooks providing national-level mortality data spanning from the early 1900s to the most recent year of available data, known as the General Record of Incidence of Mortality (GRIM) books.

The GRIM books present:

  • age- and sex-specific counts
  • age- and sex-specific rates, and
  • other summary measures such as median age at death and potential years of life lost.

As part of the AIHW’s commitment to provide access to timely, relevant data and organisational excellence (AIHW, 2024) work is being undertaken to streamline the process for producing these 56 books with aims to:

  • release the GRIM books earlier than usual, and
  • automate the manual processes to free up time for other valuable work.

The number of books, or causes of death in the books, are not under revision.

To help shape this new process, we are seeking feedback to better understand the way in which the GRIM books are being used, including for specific components of the books.

The short survey below includes questions for specific components of the GRIM books, and provides the opportunity for general feedback. Depending on the level of detail you would like to provide, the questions should take approximately 3 minutes of your time.

Please assist us by completing the GRIM Books Survey.
