The Model of Care Data Set (MoC DS) is a national collection of data about the maternity models of care available at each maternity service.

The data elements reflect the characteristics of these models including, the women a model is designed for, the maternity carers involved and the role they play, and aspects of how and where care is provided. Each model of care is classified into 1 of 11 model categories based on these characteristics. This data set reflects maternity care at a service level but can also be used by maternity services to populate person-level models of care items in the National Perinatal Data Collection. Summary information about the models of care available at each maternity service can be found at the MaCCS website.

Data scope

The scope of this data set includes models of maternity care available to pregnant and birthing women. Maternity services classify their models of care using the Maternity Care Classification System (MaCCS). The MaCCS provides a standardised nomenclature for the collection. The data elements describe the different characteristics of models of maternity care around 3 domains:

  • the women a model is designed for
  • the carers working in the model
  • aspects of how and where care is provided.

This collection reflects maternity care at a service level but can also be used by maternity services to populate person-level models of care items in the National Perinatal Data Collection.

The development of the MaCCS and the data set were undertaken as part of the National Maternity Data Development Project under the guidance of an expert advisory group. This data set is not mandated for collection.
